Mitzvot and Hosting

At FPS we encourage participation in our services and two ways to be involved are in having the honour of a 'mitzvah' on the Shabbat morning or evening and in hosting the kiddush.

A mitzvah is literally translated as a commandment.  Used in this context it means being honoured with lighting the Friday night candles, opening the ark, dressing and undressing the scroll, reading the Haftarah or having a 'call up' (an aliyah) to the Torah.

On the following pages there is some information for you to guide you in preparing for these communal honours.  However, it is impossible to answer every question so please do get in touch if there is something you are not sure about.  It is better to be relaxed on the day having asked the question than to stress that you might have misunderstood the instructions.
